FASD Light

Understanding the Invisible. Helping Every Child Be Seen.

A gentle place to begin

Some disabilities are easy to see. FASD often isn't.

Children and adults affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders may experience challenges with memory, judgment, impulse control, learning, communication and understanding consequences.

What can sometimes look like defiance or unwillingness may reflect a brain that processes the world differently.

Understanding can change what happens next.

What Is FASD?

A spectrum that can be quiet, not obvious, and easily misunderstood.

What it is

FASD is a general term for a range of effects that can follow alcohol exposure before birth. There is no single look and no single set of experiences.

Why it is missed

Many of the differences involve how the brain works day to day, so they can be mistaken for something else.

What comes next

This is an early, general introduction. Carefully reviewed educational material with reliable sources will be added here later.

Who this site is for

Different people meet FASD in different rooms.

Families

Resources for parents, grandparents, siblings and caregivers are being developed for this section.

Educators

Classroom-focused material for teachers and school personnel will be added here over time.

Healthcare

Information for clinicians and other healthcare professionals is planned for a future update.

Courts & Justice

Material for attorneys, judges, juvenile justice staff and social workers will be developed here.

Advocates

Advocacy and community education material will be added as the site grows.

Everyone, really

Anyone who wants to understand FASD is welcome here. If any of this feels familiar, you are not alone.

Earlier understanding

Earlier Understanding Can Change a Life

When a person's needs are recognized and appropriate support is offered, families, schools and communities can respond more effectively. Understanding does not remove every challenge, but it can change how a person is treated along the way.

Fewer years of being misread, mislabeled, or left to figure things out alone.

Support that fits the person, rather than a response built on an assumption.

Why FASD Light Exists

FASD Light exists to help make an often misunderstood disability easier to recognize and understand.

Our goal is to bring families, educators, professionals and communities together around knowledge, compassion and practical support.
